Dr. William J. Cooper has traversed the planet studying the chemistry of water and the life that depends upon it. His most "focused photographic " subjects are butterflies, penguins, and the plants and animals of a small Costa Rican Rain Forest, Pirella Ecological (Butterfly) Garden, in Horquetas de Sarapiqui, Herdia, Costa Rica..
He served as director of the Drinking Water Research Center at Florida International University and as a consultant to the International Atomic Energy Agency and numerous international cooperative research projects.
Cooper received his doctorate in marine and atmospheric chemistry from the University of Miami in 1987. His major research interests include sunlight-mediated photochemical reactions in natural waters and free radical chemistry of aqueous solutions. Cooper has also been involved in the application of ozonation for ballast water treatment at full-scale on oil tankers.
Among his proudest achievements being elected in 2011 as a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS).
